In indexing words into this database we have kept the spellings consistent with the way in which they were written by Masta, Day and Laurent. Within their records of the language there exists, as seen in the chart above, only slight variations which should offer no problems with pronunciations. It is important to note that within Western Abenaki there is little if any change in meaning between the soft or hard letters g/k, b/p, s/z, d/t. For example, "kizi", or "gisi" would both mean "after/already", likewise "ta", or "da" mean "and".
However, when indexing the words presented by Aubery, Rale and Mathevet changes have been made to offer some consistency. These include the need to change the use of "8" to represent "w" and "an" to represent the nasal "8". Also, often the use of "e" in place of "a". When "r" does appear, it has been changed to "l" before it is indexed within this database. This can be seen in the examples offered above, where Aubery offers "bear" as "a8ess8s". In this example you can see where the changes need to be made changing it to "awasos" to offer a more consistent orthography. For words not recorded by Day, Laurent or Masta and only found within the works of Aubery, Rale or Mathevet the same changes have been made, making these words fully accessible to the users of our online dictionary.
